KIIT is not only confined to professional activities by imparting technical education, but, it is also committed towards the welfare of the downtrodden people in the society. KIIT volunteered its services during natural disaster, providing special care and economic interest of the weaker sections of the people through relief and rehabilitation programme in both tribal and rural areas and protecting them from social injustice and all forms of exploitation through Kalinga Relief and Charitable Trust.
The trust works to meet the emerging needs and the socio-economic development of the deprived sections of the society living in the remote and inaccessible areas of the state. The activities are designed to sensitize the beneficiaries and enable them to participate in identifying and addressing their needs to sustain the progress of development, which are as per the objectives set for the trust.
One of the major objectives of the trust is to bring out positive change among the tribal people by intervening through education programme which can improve the socio-economic condition of the tribal people. Those are the following :-

Orissa being predominantly a tribal inhabited state, the state Govt. has set up several tribal schools under the Special Tribal Development Agencies. Ironically, these residential schools have limited facilities to fulfill the aspirations of the various tribal communities. These schools are not accessible to the tribal children because of their location in the remote hilly areas and perhaps is the prime cause of failure.
Dr. Achyuta Samanta’s concern about the poor and neglected tribal children in the inaccessible parts of the state gave him the idea to open a school. Earlier in his life he had no means to afford his education. He has already realized the importance of education in the life. His conviction is that only education can improve the quality of life of the tribal children.
He wanted to help those poor tribal boys and girls who are inflicted with poverty. With this notion Dr. Samanta decided to set up a learning centre for the tribal children in the state capital in the year 1993. Initially, the KIIT Residential Tribal Schools was confined to only Primary and Secondary classes. In the year 2004, the school expanded its education programme by adding +2 Science classes in the tribal school with the name ‘Kalinga School for Socially Challenged’. In the year 2006, the residential tribal school diversified its activities by providing vocational education, livelihood education for self-sustainability of the educational programme.
The centre i.e. Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences aims:-
- To provide employment opportunities to the tribal communities.
- To give them on opportunity to upgrade their skills by providing them with exposure in and outside the state.
- To provide a combination of formal education with vocational training.
- To offer a multitude of vocational training courses.
- To provide a choice of livelihood activities for the tribal children.
Recognising the diversity in the social fabric the school has adopted the following features as its organizational culture to achieve total quality management.
- Discipline: growth oriented and effectively balanced with freedom of expression.
- Student: Teacher interaction -a right balance between formality and informality.
- Interpersonal Relations: a right balance between independence and interdependence.
